Can Firestick Be Moved to Another TV?

So, you have a Firestick installed on a TV, but you want to switch it to a different TV? If you don’t know the technical in and outs, you may be concerned whether or not your Firestick can be moved to another TV.

In this post we’ll cover moving Firestick to another TV and some considerations before moving the device.

Considerations Before Moving Firestick to a Different TV

Most times you can simply plug in power and plug the Firestick into any HDMI port on the new TV and things will just work. But there are times when it’s not that simple and these things should be considered:

  • Does the TV have an available HDMI port? If not, you may need to unplug one device from the new TV to free up a port. If you have an older TV that doesn’t have any HDMI ports, you will need to use an adapter to connect it to different ports.
  • Amazon recommends you use Firestick with an enhanced HDMI port that is HDCP 2.0 or 2.2 compliant. Check the documentation with your TV to see if the new TV is compatible. Here are some common locations for this HDCP related settings on popular TV brands:
    • Hisense: With the input switched to the one Roku is using, go to “Menu” > “Picture” > “HDMI Format” > “Enhanced Format“.
    • Insignia/Toshiba: Press and hold the Home button on the remote to bring up the quick menu then select “Picture” > “Advanced Settings” > “HDMI Input Mode” > “Mode 2 (2.0)“.
    • LG: Go to “Home” > “HDMI” > “Settings” > “Advanced” > “Picture” > “HDMI Ultra Deep Color” > “On” > “Restart“.
    • Philips and Roku TV: Go to “Preferences” > “HDMI mode” > choose Firestick input > “HDMI Mode” > “Standard“.
    • Samsung: Go to “Menu” > “Picture” > “Picture Options” > “HDMI UHD Color” > “On” > “Restart“.
    • Sony: Go to “Home” > “Settings” > “External inputs” > “HDMI signal format” > “HDMI” > choose Firestick input > “Enhanced mode“.
    • Vizio: Go to “Menu” > “Input Settings” > choose Firestick input > “Full HD Color” > “On“.

Note: Some TVs have one enhanced HDMI port while the others are not. You may need to check the manual of for your TV to see if there are enhanced ports.

  • Firestick usually automatically adjusts the display resolution to a setting compatible with whatever TV it is plugged into. It doesn’t always get the setting right though. If the screen is larger or smaller once you make the switch to the new TV, you can press and hold Up and Rewind on the remote for 10 seconds to switch resolution settings. You can also change this under Settings > Display > Video Resolution.
  • If the device name for your Firestick has been named after the room it used to be installed in, you may want to change the device name to something new.

Transferring Firestick to a Different TV?

Most of the time, switching Firestick to a new TV is a simple as these 3 steps:

  1. Remove the Firestick from the HDMI port of the old TV. Take the power block and cable along for the ride to the new TV.
  2. Plug the Firestick into an available HDMI port on the new TV. Plug in the power block and power cable.
  3. Switch the new TV to the HDMI input port that your Firestick is now plugged into.
  4. Setup the remote to control the volume and power on the new TV. Do this by going to Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment > TV > Change TV.
